Growing it out without the awkward months

Going from short to long takes about a year. Sigrún on keeping it looking intentional the whole way.

Client with a longer scissor cut on top

Everyone who grows their hair out hits the same wall around month three. The sides stick out, the back curls over the collar, and the top is not long enough to do anything with.

Keep cutting

It sounds wrong, but the way through is regular trims. Not for length. We leave the top alone and shape the sides and back so they grow in at the same pace, instead of racing ahead.

A rough timeline

  • Months one to three. Sides and back tidied every five weeks. Top untouched.
  • Months four to six. The sides are left longer so they can meet the top. This is the part that needs the most patience.
  • Months seven onwards. Everything is long enough to cut as one shape, and trims move to every eight weeks.

Ask for the long hair cut

Book the scissor cut for long hair so we have the full hour. Growing out is mostly about weight and where it sits, and that is slow, careful work with scissors, not clippers.
